TeX--XeT with Hebrew on Windows 95.
                 -----------------------------------

The package is available on a CD-ROM, which can be borrowd from
Rama - see address below.
You can also send me an empty CD and I will send it back to you
with the files on it. Please add stamps for return delivery.

The files can also be retrieved from
    ftp://ftp.cc.huji.ac.il/tex/tex_for_windows/tex_system_for_download

The following explains how to install a TeX/LaTeX with Hebrew addition
on MS Windows 95/98/2000.

The package includes an official TeX system, MikTeX 2, as well as
an alternative TeX, namely, eTeX, which is used for right-to-left
texts. Other necessary utilities, related to TeX, are included.
The package is made of a number of smaller packages working together, namely
Miktex2.0, Etex3.14159-2.1, Ghostview 3.1 (plus
GhostView 6.01) plus the addition of Hebrew macros and fonts.

Activation of the various programs is done via a Windows shell program.
Three such programs are included here: WinEdt winedt5 (v.5.2 Build 2001213)
TexShell (Version 0.61) and WinShell (Version 2.0).
Choose one of them and install it.
You can also install all of them, try them out, and then
decide which one suits you better,
Winedt is shareware. You have to pay 50$ to its writer.
TexShell and WinShell are free.

I M P O R T A N T
*****************
If you already have Winedt and/or Miktex of previous versions,
uninstall them before re-installing the new versions.
Then, erase the directory \texmf if it exists and the directory localtexmf
if it exists.

If you have a previous Winedt32 (not the previous Winedt 5.1,
which is newer than Winedt32), and you have paid 50$ for it,
you need now a new password from the author.
In order to get the new password (=code) for WinEdt5 send a mail
message to
                           support@winedt.com
The subject of the mail message should be
                           WinEdt 5 - Code Request
In the mail message write your name and your e-mail address,
and ask for a new code for WinEdt 5.

Installation
------------
1. Create a new temporary somewhere on your disk.
For convenience reasons, call it TEXTEMP

2. Copy the *.zip and the *.exe files from the current directory
   (...windows\new_cd) into your temporary directory.
The files you will copy to TEXTEMP are:
   miktex-2.0-lvl-1.zip
   miktex-2.0-lvl-2.zip
   miktex-2.0-lvl-3.zip
   miktex-2.0-lvl-4.zip
   miktex-2.0-lvl-5.zip
   heb_add_miktex2.zip
   winedt5.exe
   heb_add_winedt5.zip
   texshell.zip
   texshell32.html
   winshell20.exe
   winshell.html
   winshellbugfix.zip
   gs601w32.exe
   gsv31w32.exe
   winzip70.exe (*)
Remember to copy the files in binary transfer mode.
(*) Copy winzip70.exe only if you do not have Winzip installed
    on your Windows.

3. If you do not have Winzip on your Windows 95, install it:
Go to the temporary directory and double click on winzip70.exe
   This will install Winzip.
iF the computer asks you whether you want WinZip to be opened
in Classic or in Wizard mode, choose Classic.

4. Install MikTeX:
Unzip all the "miktex...." files by clicking on each one of them.
Unzip them into the temporary directory.
   Then activate the file setupwiz.exe
   This will install Miktex.
During installation, tell the computer that you DO want a local tree.
You can either choose the suggeted name (Local TeXMF) or choose
a different name for the directory. However, note that
if you give a different name, you'll have to mention it later
   during the installation.

After MikTeX installation finishes, restart the computer.
After installation, open a DOS window and make sure that
MikTeX's bin path is included in DOS path; that is, when
you type PATH in the DOS window, you see that the bin directory
(the default is /program files/MIKTEX/miktex/bin) is included.
Then install the Hebrew addition to Miktex.

5. Install the Hebrew addition to Miktex:
   Click on the file heb_add_miktex2.zip
   Winzip will be activated.
   Choose Extract
The files should be extracted onto MiKTeX local directory.
If your temporary directory is the deafult, that is,
c:\Local TeXMF , extract the files into C:\
Otherwise, extract the files into the drive containing
your local miktex directory, (C:\ or D;\ etc)
and then move the content of the created Local TeXMF directory
   onto your chosen local directory.
If the computer asks you whether to replace files, choose
   "Yes to All".

Every time a package or font is added to MiKTeX,
You have to "refresh" MikTeX. Do it now:
   Click Start --> Programs --> Miktex 2 --> MiKTeX options -->
         ---> Refresh now

6. Install one of the shells, either WinEdt, TexShell or WinShell.
The three shells enable running the following programs, in addition
to the regular TeX and LaTeX, viewer, Ghostview etc --
TeX-XeT right to left as well as left to right TeX
LaTeX-XeT right to left as well as left to right LaTeX
HED Hebrew - English DOS Editor
W2D Converting Windows Hebrew to DOS Hebrew
D2W Converting DOS Hebrew to Windows Hebrew

A. Install WinEdt:
   Activate winedt5.exe.
When the computer asks you to give the name of a folder for unzipping,
type c:\textemp (if textemp is on c:) and then click on Unzip .
Then activate the file setup.exe created within textemp.
   This will install WinEdt.
The computer will ask you where do you want to install
winedt. It would be the easiest if you install it
in the suggested dir, that is, c:\program files\winedt
Otherwise, you'll later have to move the files of the hebrew addition
   to the appropriate directory.
Now install the Hebrew addition to WinEdt:
   Click on the file heb_add_winedt5.zip
   Winzip will be activated.
   Choose Extract
You have to extract the files into the previously created direcotry
   winedt
If you have installed winedt in c:\program files\winedt,
then extract the files into C:\
Otherwise, extract the files into the drive containing
your winedt directory, (C:\ or D;\ etc)
and then move the content of the created ....program files\winedt
directory onto your chosen winedt directory.
If the computer asks you whether to replace files, choose
   "Yes to All".

b. Install TexShell:
   Click on texshell.zip
Choose Extract and tell the computer the name of the directory
into which you want to extract the files.
If you accept the default, the files will be extracted into
   \local\tex\bin\win32
Now install the Hebrew addition to TexShell:
Click on Heb_add_texshell.zip and extract the files.
If you accept the default, the files will be extracted
onto \local\tex\bin\win32 also. In any case, you should
extract the files from the Hebrew addition onto the same directory
in which the other texshell files reside.
When the computer asks you if to replace files, answer yes
After installation, create a shortcut to texshell.exe
   on the desktop.
Note -- You start activating TeXShell by specifying a "Main File" -
You do it via the menu TeX. The Main File should be your TeX/LaTeX
   file.

c. Install WinShell:
   Click on WinShell20.exe
Choose Extract and tell the computer the name of the directory
into which you want to extract the files.
If you can accept the default, the files will be extracted into
   \program files\winshell
Now click on WinShellBugFix.zip and extract the files into
the same winshell directory which you have used before.
Now install the Hebrew addition to WinShell:
Click on Heb_add_winshell.zip and extract the files.
Again, the files should be extracted to the same winshell
   directory specified before.
When the computer asks you if to replace files, answer yes .
After installation you must insert the name of the directory
containing the winshell files into autoexec.bat and restart the
computer. Otherwise, the hebrew-related procedures will not work.
If you have used the default directory, you have
to add the path c:\progra~1\winedt to the path specified
   within the file autoexec.bat
If a shortcut to WinShell has not been automatically created
on the desktop, create such a shortcut to winshell.exe

7. Install GhostScript and GhostView
Install GhostScript by double clicking on gs601w32.exe.
Accept all the installation defaults by clicking next...next ... etc.
Install GSview by double clicking on gsv31w32.exe.
Accept all the installation defaults by clicking next...next ... etc.

8. Edit the file c:\autoexec.bat
Make sure that the PATH (in the line SET PATH ......)
   contains ......\mikteX\miktex\bin
Also, make sure that \texmf\miktex\bin, which is the path
to the old miktex ,DOES NOT exist within autoexec.bat.

9. Erase the directory textemp

10. Reset(=reboot) the computer.

You will now have all the package installed.
Look for the icon of either WinEdt, TeXShell or WinShell on your
desktop. If you don't have an icon, create a shortcut for
winedt.exe, texshell.exe or winshell.exe, according to the program
you want to use.

Within WinEdt, WinShell and/or TexShell you open, create and edit
the TeX/LaTeX input files and process them.
Processing is done
in WinEdt via the menu Accessories or by using the supplied icons
in TexShell via the menu TeX oor by using the supplied buttons
in WinShell via the supplied icons

                                                                            %
If you get an error when trying to process a Hebrew tex or latex file %
with TeX--XeT or LaTeX--XeT, and the log file says there is %
an illegal \beginR command (which means it does not recognize the %
right to left commands) you probably have to add, as the absolutely first %
line in your main input file, the following: %
\TeXXeTstate=1 %
                                                                            %

Documentation files for Miktex are available in
...Program files\MIKTeX\doc
Documentation files for the Hebrew addition to MikTeX are in
...Local TeXMF\doc\hebrew
(Note -- change if your installation directories are different)

help for WinEdt, TexShell and/or WinShell is available through
help menus existing in those programs' windows.
The html files on the CD contain description of TeXShell and WinShell.
Click on those html files in order to read them via Netscape or
via the Internet Explorer.

Note - every time a package or font is added to MiKTeX,
   you have to refresh MikTeX.
You do it by clicking Start --> Programs --> Miktex 2 -->
                                    MiKTeX options ---> Refresh now

Note - if you want the computer to go to the problematic
line once you type "e" in response to a tex error,
you have to edit the file miktex.ini
and insert a line like the following --
Editor="C:\Program Files\WinEdt\WinEdt.exe" "[Open('%f');SelPar(%l,7)]"
in the appropriate place.
The same line should be inserted into the yap.exe (viewer)
software if you want the dvi search to work.

How to prepare Hebrew tex files on Windows 95
---------------------------------------------
You can use the winedt editor, or the other shells,
using Hebrew fonts (you can change the fonts
using each program's menus).
You can also use Windows 95's NOTEPAD.EXE and WORDPAD.EXE
You can also use MS WORD. You save the file as a text file
and it is ready to be processed by tex.
