If you use TeX, you can prepare your document on your PC, and once you are satisfied with the results you can move the prepared file to another computer, where access is available to a laser printer.
In order to use TeX, you prepare an input file, containing the text as well as various TeX's keywords (also referred to as TeX's commands) by which you tell TeX how to handle your text. TeX's keywords are words starting with a back slash, \. To use TeX efficiently, you have to learn more then a few keywords.
TeX's environment is not always friendly. However, once you get over an introductory period and get used to it, you will probably find it helpful and worth the time spent on it.
